Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES)

Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation

Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) NMES is a non-invasive means of muscle rehabilitation after injury, surgery or disease. The device applies customised electrical stimulus to a specific muscle or muscle group to cause contraction. The physiotherapist is able to correctly select a suitable frequency, application time and application location in order to facilitate the action of the muscle, re-educating its correct function. For orthopaedic problems, NMES is useful for reducing muscle atrophy, restoring joint mobility and pain reduction. It has also been proven to reduce muscle hypertonicity and spasm in the equine back.
